Central Govt to put five major road projects in Punjab and Haryana on fast track

In an announcement made in Chandigarh on June 25, Krishan Pal Gurjar – Minister of State for Surface Transport, Highways and Shipping – said that the new Central government has plans underway to fast-track the construction work on five major road projects in Punjab and Haryana. The five projects to be put on fast track are worth Rs 4,570 crore.

Gurjar said that the Punjab-Haryana road projects earmarked by the BJP-led NDA government for speed-up include the projects related to four-laning of four key roads in Haryana, as well as six-laning of the Chandigarh-Ludhiana highway.

The roads which will be four-laned in Haryana include Panchkula-Yamuna Nagar National Highway; the Ambala-Kaithal National Highway; the Pinjore-Baddi National Highway; and the Ambala-Saha-Shahbad State Highway.

Meanwhile, so far as the six-laning of the 86-km Chandigarh-Ludhiana road is concerned, the project has been shrouded with uncertainty since 2005. According to officials, the alignment of three bypasses — Mohali to Kharar, Khamano and Samrala – has been approved by the Highways Authority of India (NHAI); thus paving the way for finalisation of the process for tenders for the six-laning work.

In addition to revealing the Central Government’s ongoing efforts to expedite work on the five road projects in Punjab and Haryana, Gurjar also said that the Government will also review the National Toll Policy for the convenience of the commuters.
