Chandigarh government plans to charge property tax based on power consumption
Department of Local Bodies in Chandigarh has proposed to charge 10% power bill as property tax for the property owners in urban areas of the state.
The government has planned to calculate the amount of property tax based on the power consumption by the owner, not be based on the size of the property.
The government has found it difficult to assess the correct amount of tax, as the survey of property is done on the basis of self-declaration forms. And most people do not declare the correct size of the property they own. Also, the size-based formula does not change subject to inflation and remains fixed.
In case of an increase in electricity charges, property tax too will increase over the years.
On commercial properties and industrial properties, the tax will be based on industrial and commercial power consumption. The tax will be charged as part of the electricity bill and will be paid by the consumer to the electricity department.
Based on the current electricity consumption in Punjab’s urban areas, the department is expected earn almost Rs 770 crore annually from property tax.
Haryana had already rationalized its formula for the collection of property tax.
