Chandigarh may get Monorail not Metro Rail: M.P Kirron Kher
Chandigarh’s dreams to commute in Metro Rail like Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Bangalore and other cities of India were shattered as the newly elected Member of Parliament (MP) Kirron Kher is against the Metro project for the city.
During the Administrator’s Advisory Council (AAC) meeting, which was chaired by Union Territory Administrator Shivraj V Patil Kirron submitted her viewpoint on the Metro project and according to her proposal Metro is not feasible for the city.
She had a logical explanation to back her viewpoint and she mentioned that though traffic congestion and parking problems needed to be addressed, the proposal for a Metro project for a city like Chandigarh was not commercially feasible. A minimum population of two to four million was required for the viability of Metro rail.
Kirron suggested an alternative to the problem and mentioned instead monorail could be feasible, with funding under the JNNURM (Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission). Her proposal also emphasised that the improvement of public transport and the BRTS (Bus Rapid Transit system) should be taken forward in a time-bound manner.
She also suggested that traffic passing through Chandigarh should be discouraged as it increases the burden on the existing city traffic and perhaps a ring road on the border with Punjab and Haryana should be constructed to bypass this traffic passing through Chandigarh.
