No Comments Sub Category:Chennai,Cities,Civic Issues Posted On: Dec 20, 2012

Chennai- The Chennai Municipal Corporation (CMC) has decided not to implement its plan of acquiring stretch of private land such as Dr. Ambedkar Salai, for the development of world-class roads.

This decision was announced by Mayor Saidai S. Duraisamy on December 18 at the public consultation meeting held in Kodambakkam for the project.

Initially the civic body planned to extend some stretches of Dr. Ambedkar Salai road by six meters but this idea was objected by many residents of the locality at public consultation meeting. People were worried about the worship places which were likely to be affected by the project.

Mayor of Chennai was concerned about the sentiments of the people thus dropped the idea to construct world class roads on private land. The tender process for world class roads will soon begin in January 2013 with completion of work within one year.

Few months ago Ashok Nagar 1 Avenue, 11 Avenue, 4 Avenue and Dr. Ambedkar Salai which are part of 30 stretches were selected for upgradation. Dr. Ambedkar Salai is 14-metre wide in some narrow stretches. The Ashok Nagar 11 Avenue is the widest of the roads which is 35-metrewide. Since residents of the locality opposed land acquisition, the estimates of the project were prepared late.

The idea behind Chennai Municipal Corporation to build this project is to help large number of pedestrians and bicycles of roads in terms of better connectivity to proposed metro stations at the end of the stretch.

To offer improved motoring experience, the 3-km-stretch covering four roads will be modified into 10-feet-wide footpaths, six bus shelters, bollards, bicycle tracks, 400-metre parallel parking on Ashok Nagar 11 Avenue, separate provision for cables and 425 new trees on a 1.5-feet wide tree line.
