Chennai Corporation to install solar bus shelters
Chennai- Chennai Corporation has proposed to construct solar bus shelters on main arterial roads to reduce the consumption of power. These solar bus shelters will also have mobile phone charging points.
This concept is not so common in Tamil Nadu as in Delhi. According to a senior official, bus shelters having at least 20 tube lights consume lot of power which led to the consideration of solar-powered bus shelters on arterial roads.
The plan is on initial stage, things like locations for the proposed solar bus shelters are still to be finalized. Chennai Corporation has also planned to install solar panels in corporation schools, hospitals and replace street tube lights with energy-saving solar and LED lamps in corporation’s extended areas.
Chennai city corporation officials are also deeply looking the solar bus shelters which were brought up in Trichy. The Member of Parliament (MP) of All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) contributed Rs 99.70 lakh for 18 bus shelters and solar power lights from his MP Local Area Development Fund. A fibre glass is placed on the roof of bus shelters that produces 200 watts power. It took Rs 4.5 lakh to construct each bus shelter.
Commuters are also happy and contended with the plan of civic body to introduce solar bus shelters. The Corporation is planning to modernize 1,024 bus stops and also provide seating facilities, hand-rails and dustbin. The work of 490 shelters will start soon. The work of rest shelters is on hold due to a stay order received by firms who were earlier managing the shelters.
If civic body join hands with a private advertising firm to build solar shelters then private firms are allowed to build shelter and sell advertising space for 20 years. The firm should pay 1.5 lakh annually to the corporation from the profit earned by advertisement.
