Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa said in a Tuesday announcement that the government has plans underway to develop a new self-supporting residential township in Kadambur near Maraimalai Nagar in suburban Chennai.

Kadambur is located at a distance of 50km from Chennai; and is in close proximity to Maraimalai Nagar which has emerged as a much sought-after realty space beyond Chennai’s suburbs.

According to the announcement made by Jayalalithaa, a land area of 222 acres in Kadambur has been earmarked for developing the residential township, which will be built by the government to meet the increasing demand for residential plots.

In the self-supporting residential township in Kadambur, the government proposes to allot plots for the low-income group category, the middle-income group category, and the high-income group category. In addition, houses will also be allotted to people belonging to weaker sections of society.

Under the proposed plan for the residential township, a 58-acre lake in Kadambur village will offer recreation facilities; in an apparent attempt to stabilize the environment in and around the township.

With the AIADMK government having put the Kadambur residential township project on fast track last year, a official in the CDMA said: “Kadambur township has been created to arrest migration to Chennai.”
