CM’s advisor blames BBMP for garbage system disorder

1 Comment Sub Category:Bangalore,Civic Issues,Maintenance Posted On: Nov 30, 2012

Bangalore- Lack of proper groundwork before initiating the project by the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has led to garbage mismanagement in the city, said Dr. A Ravindra, Advisor to the CM of Karnataka.

According to Ravindra, several awareness campaigns and huge preparation are required before implementing any change in solid waste management, particularly, in a large city like Bangalore.

Earlier, the city’s garbage issue was not a major issue. The actual problem arose only after the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) shut the landfills.

He alleged that BBMP must have prepared short-term and long-term plans and be prepared for risks that are associated with it. But the civic body, in fact, did not even look like it has any problem.

Garbage segregation is not something that happens overnight. There has to be several preparations even before the change is implemented including awareness campaigns, staff training, proper facilities for waste disposal, spot locations to store garbage and also time to encourage people to make the shift, uttered the advisor.

But the civic body, all of a sudden, announced about segregation of waste and it did not bother to have garbage disposal system. And the BBMP’s unpreparedness has resulted in garbage piling up in street corners and all these issues, speculated Ravindra. Since the Palike has already begun the initiative, it should not give up anyway. Although there aren’t any other options left with, the BBMP has to use this opportunity and prove its efficiency.
