Commerce Department to reopen debate on special laws for SEZs

No Comments Sub Category:Realty News Posted On: Jul 29, 2014

The debate on whether there should be special labour laws for special economic zones (SEZs) will be reopened by the Commerce Department this week.

According to the information shared by unidentified sources, discussions on a special allowance for SEZs are scheduled to be held later this week. The issue has already been brought to the attention of the development commissioners by the Commerce Department, which is also mulling how procedures in the SEZs can be simplified.

The Commerce Department’s move to reopen debate on having a unique labour law for SEZs is apparently rooted in the fact that, with the new government at the Centre, the Department is hopeful that a new labour regime for SEZs can be pushed through.

However, to initiate the move, the Commerce Department plans to consult the development commissioners of the zones, so that a wider debate involving other ministries can be reopened.

Despite the fact that the Commerce Department deems SEZs to be one of the major components of the government’s manufacturing strategy for boosting exports and also increasing the sector’s share in overall economic activity, an official said, with regard to whether the Commerce Department will be successful in its plans: “Finally, it’s a political call.”
