Complying with fire safety norms- A distant dream in Delhi and NCR
The fire officers in Delhi and the NCR (National Capital Region) are distressed with the data that 40% of the buildings in these areas do not comply with the fire safety norms. The sad part is that these unsafe building not only are in the residential and commercial complexes: many schools, hospitals and nursing homes too fail to comply with the norms posing hazardous threats to its dwellers.
The sad part in India is that even after multiple accidents and incidents, no one pays a heed to the fire and safety norms and continue functioning as before. The fire officers stated that the playschool, which caught fire on Tuesday, did not have a no-objection certificate (NOC).
The data from the fire department shows that 47 nursing homes in the city don’t have a fire NOC. Many schools and hospitals have not bothered to obtain an NOC and follow the fire and safety norms which have posed a threat to the lives of schoolchildren and patients.
They had conducted this audit in most of the major establishments in the city and found that 690 nursing homes comply partially with the fire and safety norms and are dilly dallying in addressing the shortcomings. After reading this report, one wonders that the value of human life is so less in this growing nation. It is sad but true.
