Connectivity improvement needed in J&K
In a bid to improve connectivity in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K), the minister for rural development Nitin Gadkari on Wednesday approved 28 rural road projects worth Rs.438 crore, a government statement said.
The roads are to be constructed in the Leh and Kargil districts in the Ladakh region of Jammu and Kashmir under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojna, it said. A total of 350 km of rural road network will be built under these projects, proposals for which were submitted by the state government. The projects cleared include six proposals in Leh district covering a road length of 142 km, to be constructed at a cost of Rs.181.4 crore. An additional 22 projects in Kargil district were approved to build 207 km of rural roads at a cost of Rs.256.6 crore, the statement said.
The construction and maintenance of these roads are necessary in order to improve the connectivity in between the places. The roads from Jammu and Kashmir that lead to Kargil are in a dreaded condition and are prone to accidents. This needs to be looked into.
