Bangalore- The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has at last determined to take up the task of resolving garbage issue following the directions of the court.

BBMP Commissioner has issued a memo listing officers who have to follow up with the court’s directions and ascertain that everything is done accordingly and within the given time.

The court has ordered the BBMP  to set up waste segregation and wet waste processing units in all 28 constituencies within two months. And then it has to set up such units in all 198 wards.

All the zonal officers have been given the task of selecting sites in all the constituencies and wards, for setting up of the segregation and wet waste collection units.

As directed by the court, the BBMP will also be renewing the Karnataka Compost Development Corporation (KCDC) which had composted the city’s waste for decades. Singasandra unit at Kudlu village will be sending wet waste to KCDC for processing.

The civic body is looking to transfer land available at Chikkanagamangala in Sarjapura Hobli to set up landfill. The chief engineers (SWM) have been authorised to get permission from the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) and prepare the site. Along with this, the BBMP will be identifying seven more landfills and get clearance from the KSPCB.

Dry waste is directed to be transported to Mandur landfill and all zonal commissioners have been tasked with bi-weekly collections and transportation of dry waste to Mandur.

A draft amendment to Section 431 of the Karnataka Municipal Corporations Act will be prepared by the BBMP and placed before the State assembly.
