CSE requests new Government to set up independent regulator for speedy green clearances

With Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar having asserted that delay in green clearances will not be tolerated, the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) has requested the newly-formed Union Government to set up an independent regulator so as to speed up green clearances.

In its request made to the Narendra Modi-led new government on Wednesday, advocacy body CSE drew attention to the fact that the setting up of an independent regulator for speeding green clearances had previously been ordered by the Supreme Court also.

Moreover, the CSE has also highlighted the need for consolidating all green clearances — environment, forests, wildlife, and coastal — so that it can be ensured that clearances are given after the overall impact of projects is duly analyzed.

The CSE’s request to have an independent green regulator essentially underscores the environmentalists’ viewpoint that in order to improve the system of green clearances, it is essential that the system is changed so that the clearances process can be made speedy.

In connection with the CSE’s request to the new Government, Sunita Narain – Director General of CSE – said that the CSE is presenting its agenda for immediate action “on the eve of World Environment Day;” and added that the advocacy body is hopeful that the new Government will consider the CSE’s request favourably.

Narain said: “We need to move beyond the rhetoric of environmental protection to implementing a tough action plan for change, and this is what we want the Government to do.”
