Dalits struggling for land ownership
Madurai- It is a dream for every dalit in Tamil Nadu to have their own land. Some of them who have are scared of losing it.
Their fear was reflected in their words when M Mayakkal of Poomparai in Kodaikanal depicted her story at ”Dalit women’s land rights,” organised by Evidence,(an NGO in Madurai). She told about the pressure faced to sell her land by non dalits.
When she refused to do so they destroyed all her crops and contaminated the water body. Things got worse when she resisted and they attacked her family and no one registered her complaint.
The same situation was seen in Vellalakundam village of Salem district, where the victim M Parameswari is struggling to protect her land. Hindu caste people threatened her by destroying a portion of a land by bulldozer. This was the story of every dalit women.
Currently all dalits are living in fear of losing their job opportunities which automatically makes owning a land much important for them . Thus Brinda Karat, CPM polit bureau member demanded reservation and promotions for dalit in private sector.
A conference was organised where resolutions were passed to provide five acres of land to dalits by government. She also demanded a detailed study of the Panchami lands which was taken away by non-dalits from dalits.
