DDA fails to meet housing needs in Delhi & NCR
The housing needs of the National capital and the NCR region is not met by the Delhi Development Authority (DDA). Hence a parliamentary panel has asked the authority to finalise its land pooling policy and involve the private sector and cooperative group housing societies in order to meet the demand.
The Standing Committee on Urban Development presented its 31st report in Parliament on Tuesday mentioned that DDA should earmark year-wise targets for the construction of affordable houses. Based on a projected population of 230 lakh by 2021, the committee has estimated an additional housing stock requirement of about 24 lakh dwelling units. The Master Plan for Delhi (MPD) 2021 promises to fulfil this need for housing for the common man. The master plan is in sync with the BJP manifesto -‘’Housing for all by 2022’’ agenda.
In the report it has been emphasised that 40% of the housing needs can be satisfied through redevelopment and upgradation of existing areas of Delhi. However the remaining 60% will be met though the 14.4 lakhs of dwelling units in new areas/urban extension. This zonal development plan 2021 is a friendly scheme for the urban poor population. Till date DDA has been able to raise only 11.69 lakh dwelling units and the committee is upset with the figures that even after 56 years of its existence, DDA has failed miserably to play the role of a facilitator/ provider in meeting the housing needs.
