DDA says public and politicians prevent it from stopping water theft
In a written response to a Dwarka resident who had complained about irregular water supply in his area, Delhi Development Authority (DDA) has stated that the public as well as the politicians prevent it from stopping illegal tapping of piped water.
The DDA said in its response to a complaint made by Arun Banerjee – a resident of Nasirpur in Dwarka – that the Authority cannot stop water theft due to “public resistance and intervention of local politicians.”
The DDA’s statement comes in response to the RTI applications which Banerjee had filed. In his applications, Banerjee has sought details of where the water from a pumping station meant for his area was being supplied.
In reference to his RTI applications, Banerjee explained that while the Madhu Vihar water pumping station is supposed to supply portable water to the residents of Nasirpur, a large part of the water supply is drained out illegally on the way at Mahavir Enclave.
Banerjee said: “I wanted DDA to acknowledge the fact and in the RTI response it has accepted the fact that water is being pilfered in unauthorized colonies.”
However, in its response to the RTI applications, the DDA has – while acknowledging the water-theft issue – clearly refrained from owning up to the illegal tapping of water; and claimed that it is helpless in dealing with water thefts because of local pressure.
