DDA to do better waste management and curb pollution in Delhi
DDA has identified eight new landfill sites. The landfills of Ghazipur, Okhla and Bhalswa are now saturated and the unscientific ways to eliminate solid waste is polluting the area. The lieutenant governor (LG) on Monday reviewed the progress in New Delhi about providing land to the corporations to deal with solid waste mess.
One of the eight landfills is likely to be in Bawana. Another plot of about 60 acres has been identified and DDA wants that to be shared among the corporations.
The Lt. Governor’s high powered committee wants to deal with air and water pollution and also has provided solutions to the vast water scarcity the national capital. It has directed the Delhi Jal Board to list and publicize the sewage treatment plants where treated waste water is available. The committee suggested that that the water should be supplied to all the government agencies like horticulture departments, DDA (Delhi Development Authority), PWD (Public Works Department) and NDMC (New Delhi Municipal Council) to be used for the various usages in their premises like toilets and non-drinking purposes.
The panel wants all the open drains to have boundary walls and wire mesh so that people don’t use the open drains as garbage dump yards.
