On late Thursday night, an attack on the demolition squad of the Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon (MCG) by the locals at Nathupur village in DLF Phase-3 area. As a result of the attack, six government officials, including four fire-fighters, were injured.
The attack was essentially a mark of protest by the locals to MCG Commissioner Praveen Kumar instructions to the MCG demolition squad to raze the unauthorised buildings near Nathupur village.
The MCG Commissioner’s directions to the demolition squad came during his visit to an area near Nathapur village where almost 90 jhuggi-jhonpris were gutted in a fire which broke out on Thursday afternoon.
While Kumar was taking a stock of the situation near Nathupur village, he was informed by the people that the land on which the jhuggis had been built belonged to the civic body. He was also told that an under-construction building and a residential building had also been constructed illegally on the land.
Kumar immediately called the MCG demolition squad and instructed them to raze the illegal buildings. This triggered a protest from the locals, who turned violent and set fire to two fire department vehicles, and also damaged six other official vehicles.
The attack by the locals caused injuries to six government officials, including four fire-fighters who were admitted to a hospital and discharged by Friday morning. In connection with the attack on government officials, a case has been registered against nearly 12 villagers.
