Delhi: DDA to table proposal for housing project for the elderly
Delhi Development Authority (DDA) will table a proposal which it has drafted for developing India biggest housing project for the elderly, with the participation of the government. The proposal is likely to be approved by the Delhi Lieutenant Governer, who is also the Chairman of DDA.
The housing project – ‘Senior Citizen Service Apartment’ – proposed by DDA for the elderly will expand over a 24-acre land area in Rohini. Nearly 4,500 one-room apartments for the elderly will be constructed at the proposed complex.
The apartments for the elderly will have common kitchens, canteens, and medical and recreational facilities; and will given to the elderly – aged over 60 years – on rental basis for their lifetime. Upon the death of the allottee, the apartment will be given to the next person on the waiting list which will be updated every year.
It will be through public-private partnership that the ‘Senior Citizen Service Apartment’ project will be developed. While DDA – which will contribute the land for the project – will be the equity partner, the private developer involved in the project will construct the apartments, as well as other facilities like library, walking track, gym, and medical room, etc.
About the ‘Senior Citizen Service Apartment’ project, a senior DDA official said: “We want this complex for the elderly to have all amenities that would make their life healthier and simpler, and simultaneously to make it affordable.”
