The Delhi Government has been ordered by the Union Government to furnish details related to the allotment of flats to the poor under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewable Mission (JNNURM).

In its correspondence to the Delhi Government with regard to flat allotments under JNNURM scheme, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation has sought details about the number of flats which have been allotted to people belonging to the economically weaker (EWS) sections of the society.

Under the ‘Basic Service to the Urban Poor’ sub-mission of the JNNURM scheme – which was launched by the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance government, a total of 67,784 flats were to be built by the government. The deadline for the construction of these flats was March 2014.

As per the information shared by an official of the Delhi Government, only 4,000 of the mentioned flats have been allotted. The official said that the data related to the allotment of flats is being collated, to send a formal response to the Ministry.

Revealing that “these flats are divided into 17 projects, of which only six projects have been completed,” an official in the Urban Development Department of the Delhi government said on the condition of anonymity: “We have to gather the exact number of allotted flats and send it to the Ministry.”
