Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway has collected around Rs.854 crore through toll tax since January 2008 till December 31, 2012. The amount collected has almost covered a huge portion of its initial construction investment of Rs. 1,240 crore.

There were three toll plazas which are located at Delhi border (Sirhaul), Kherki Daula and Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) loop for tax collection.

According to the reports and the traffic volumes, Delhi Gurgaon Super Connectivity Limited (DGSCL) should recover the initial investment within six years of starting operations, i.e. by January next year. The authority can collect the tax for 20 years i.e. 2008 – 2028.

The records of National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) claims that e-toll plaza bordering Delhi is the top revenue earner with a monthly toll collection of Rs 11 crore.

As per the records, around 201 lakh vehicles crosses the 32-lane expressway on everyday basis, excluding two-three wheelers, tractors, slow-moving and exempted vehicles.

Following the notice issued by the Punjab and Haryana High Court banning tax collection for 25 days, there was a drastic change in the month of September 2012 as collection of toll tax went down from Rs. 11 crore to Rs. 1.83 crore.

The order came after the concessionaire failed to take adequate measures to deal with traffic congestion. The DGSCL shares the revenue on a 50:50 basis if the number of vehicles crosses 1.30 lakh in a day.

NHAI rewarded this built-operate-transfer (BoT) project to Jaypee DSC Limited (now DGSCL) in 2002. The company spent Rs. 1,240 crore on the expressway but later also loan of Rs.1,600 crore against the project from a group of lenders, including IDFC.
