Delhi HC told that ‘Tata Camelot’ in Chandigarh falls under seismic zone
During a recent hearing held last week, the Delhi High Court was told that the ‘Tata Camelot Housing project’ near Sukhna Lake in Chandigarh falls under the seismic zone.
It was during the hearing of two PILs by a bench comprising Chief Justice G Rohini and Justice R S Endlaw that the Delhi High Court was informed that the area on which Tata is coming up with its Rs 1,800-crore Tata Camelot Housing project falls within the ecologically sensitive area which is “prone to seismic activity.”
The two PILs – respectively filed by Alok Jagga and Sarin Memorial Legal Aid Foundation – were previously being dealt with by the Punjab High Court, but the Supreme Court had transferred them to the Delhi High Court, which has been asked to conclude its hearing by August 31.
Disclosing the information about the area on which Tata is building the Tata Camelot Housing project in Chandigarh, Additional Solicitor General P S Patwalia said that the area lies close to the foothills of the Shivalik range of mountains; and added that the entire 53.39-acres stretch of land earmarked for the Tata Camelot project is prone to seismic activity.
With a total of 92,100 flats having been planned for Tata Camelot project, Patwalia said: “Around 2,000 flats will have a population more than the village ‘Naya Gaon Panchayat’ in the area and will have impact on the natural resources.”
