Delhi & NCR: Metro tunnel completed in Delhi: DMRC
Delhi Metro is rushing to complete the tunnelling work for its two new corridors as now it has to abide by the deadline of 2016. This news will give some sigh of relief to the Delhiites as on Wednesday, the DMRC announced that the tunnelling work between Netaji Subhash Place and Shalimar Bagh on the Mukundpur-Shiv Vihar line has been completed.
We can only hope that the traffic woes will be reduced once the metro work is complete. According to a spokesperson, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has completed the tunnelling work between Netaji Subhash Place and Shalimar Bagh by making a TBM (tunnel boring machine) breakthrough at Shalimar Bagh.
The DMRC spokesman Anuj Dayal also mentioned that the TBM has completed the tunnelling of the 1,230m stretch consisting of 1,025 rings with a diameter of 5.7 metres. The same tunnel boring machine completed another tunnel breakthrough on this section in March.
The spokesperson Dayal giving the details of the work mentioned that the machine was lowered into the launching shaft at Netaji Subhash Place in April after retrieval and maintenance. This tunnel also crossed the elevated viaduct of the currently operational Dilshad Garden-Rithala Metro corridor near Netaji Subhash Place, a canal crossing and Kasturba Polytechnic building, as well as an elevated road under construction at Shalimar Bagh, which were some of the major engineering challenges in this project.
