At the meeting of Delhi CM Sheila Dikshit and the deputy chairman of planning commission for finalization of the city’s annual plan, city authorities informed the Planning Commission that RWAs and group housing societies will be entrusted with the task of collecting property tax in their localities. Authorities are hoping to improve the collection of property tax by involving RWAs.

Residents Welfare Associations (RWAs) and Housing society will be “rewarded” for their work and for prompt collection of property tax in their locality. Revenue from property tax was Rs 1,063 crore in 2008-09. This year it is expected to go up to Rs 1,158 crore.

Sources said city authorities informed the Planning Commission on Wednesday that RWAs and group housing societies will be entrusted with the task of collecting property tax in their localities and in return will be “rewarded” for the work. The procedure for involving RWAs will need to be worked out with the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) which is the agency responsible for collection of property tax.
