Diminishing lake catches attention of residents, authorities
As an effect of slanting number of land availability in Bangalore, the rate of encroachment activities has augmented in various parts of the city.
The Vibhutipura Lake near HAL airport is gradually diminishing due to mounting encroachment activities.
A decade ago, the lake was full of clean water but in the last five years, as an outcome of rising number of apartments, the lake has been largely contaminated. Nearby residents dump waste while sewage flows into the lake from the surroundings.
On 3rd November, over 500 residents of various localities on the periphery of the Vibhutipura lake near HAL airport, assembled for a walkathon as part of the ‘Save the Vibhutipura Lake’ campaign.
They aimed to increase awareness about the lake and to pressurise the authorities to speed up the restoration work. The other objective was to announce the formation of a lake improvement trust comprising of citizens from all the surrounding areas. The trust plans to get actively involved in the restoration and future maintenance of the lake.
The work on restoration would be inaugurated by the end of this month, stated MLA Nandisha Reddy. He instructed the BDA officials to involve the proposed citizens’ trust – Vibhutipura Kere Abhivruddhi Mattu Samrakshana Samiti (ViKAS) in all the work.
