Diwali celebrations generate 1,200 metric tonnes waste in Delhi
Compared to the last year’s Diwali celebrations in Delhi, this year’s Diwali has increased the waste by about 1,200 tonnes with heaps of crackers, wrappers and sweet boxes.
About 1,000-1,200 metric tonnes of Diwali waste was generated this year according to municipal corporations.
Last year’s Diwali eve had generated about 5,785 tonnes of waste and on Diwali about 3,563 tonnes. The numbers this year are 6,888 tonnes and 4,446 tonnes comparatively. The waste generated on usual days is about 1,900 tonnes in Ghazipur landfill but this year’s Diwali had increased it to 250-300 tonnes.
A key cause for the increase of the waste was the absence of most sanitation workers due to the Govardhan Pooja. This waste will be accumulated with more waste in the next few days. It was stated by the officials that special arrangements should be made to clear the garbage by picking up burnt crackers and other litter on the road.
