The size of Mumbai is increasing. According to 1991 development plan, the size of the city was 437.71 sq km. While at the latest city plan it is observed that the area of the city has been increased to 457.17 sq km.

This increase happened due to the change in definition of the open spaces. As per the latest government norm, a better and detailed documentation of preserved open spaces are listed.

The civic body has added more free spaces to enhance the quality of life of citizens as these are their fundamental right. As the green lungs of Mumbai have been rapidly declining, the addition of more open space in city limit will improve the civic life.

The civic body will also protect those open spaces for the betterment of the civic life for residents in apartments in Mumbai.

Some officials said that many of the new open space categories which are included in the city limit, are seasonal, particularly around water bodies and rivers.

The new land-use plan has been prepared by a BMC-appointed consortium of Indian and French urban planning companies called Group SCE India Pvt Ltd.

This new land use plan will be used to create a Development Plan that is prepared every 20 years by the civic body.
