First Phase of Smart City Kochi to be Completed by 2015
Kochi is one of the cities which the Government has decided to develop into a smart city among the 22 other cities on its project list. Smart City Kochi, as it has been termed announced its recent clearance from the environment board and is now on track to complete infrastructural development and aims to complete its first phase by 2015.
The newly formed Government, headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, had announced its plans of building 100 new smart cities across India which aims to provide better amenities in terms of civic facilities, transportation and connectivity and also a better environment. Apart from Kochi, Shendra-Bidkin along the Delhi-Mumbai Industrial corridor and Dholera in Gujarat has also been included in the list of Smart Cities to be developed in the first phase of the said project.
Smart City Kochi refers to the IT Special Economic Zone. The Government of Kerala holds a 16% share in the project, 84% at stake with TECOM Investments while the main investors for the company are a subsidiary of Dubai Holding.
Project Target: about 70 per cent of the roads required to complete the entire project allotted in the first phase of development is aimed to be completed by July of 2015.
Construction for the project has started in full swing.
The first phase construction and basic infrastructure developments for the entire project have already been taken up in the first phase itself.
The complete project completion date has been set as the year 2020.
It is expected that the completion of the project will create over 90,000 job opportunities.
Planning of the Project: The building of infrastructure for the project has been strategized in a manner that will ensure development in different phases. The different plots are in processing and non-processing zones of the SEZ are provided with road connectivity, power and water communication as was envisaged in the master plan – as per official statement from the company.
Construction work for supply of power distribution, water, street lighting and data communication connectivity too have already started and are in various stages of implementation.
