For growth Karnataka to focus on tier-II cities
The Karnataka government hopes in tier-II cities infrastructure will be up to expectations by 2017. M Maheshwar Rao, addressing the CII-Karnataka’s State Council meet on ‘Karnataka for India’s Growth Story’ says, “The State government is committed to creating more jobs in manufacturing sector. The aim is to return the sector on a growth path of 12 to 13 per cent.”
The state is focusing on needs like improving connectivity, removal of VAT on aviation turbine fuel (ATF) to attract more flights to tier-II cities as alternate growth centres, timely clearance of applications, development of industrial corridors, last-mile connectivity, public-private partnership initiatives, skill development, ease of land acquisition, single window clearance, promotion of industrial clusters and creating a vision group to develop Karnataka as an industrial hub were some of the important points that emerged during the meet.
Five in Karnataka
S Chandrashekar, past Chairman, CII Karnataka and Managing Director of Bhoruka Power Corporation, says on development of tier-II cities, that there are about 54 tier-II cities in India out of these 54 cities 5 are in Karnataka while Bellary, Gulbarga and Chikkaballapur are on the borderline on classification of tier-II cities.
S Chandrashekar focused on the need of improving infrastructure in cities like Mangalore, Mysore and Belgaum to encourage investment in the State.
D Satya Murty, Additional Chief Secretary, Karnataka Urban Development Department, says that, industrial hubs are the main asset for development of smaller towns and cities. He further added that the development of tier-II cities is depended on road, rail and air connectivity and industrial corridors. He requested to industry bodies to come with some solid plans for the development of these cities.
