GHMC to remove metro route foot over bridges
Chennai- Owing to the request of Metro rail authorities, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is ready to remove foot over bridges in the city.
The authorities requested GHMC to remove over-bridges as the construction of metro has picked up pace in the core city. The removal of footbridges will not only affect vehicular traffic but it will also pose difficulty for pedestrians to cross roads. In the next six months, the viaducts will be also laid in before the arrival of monsoon.
There are total six functioning foot over bridges (FoBs) on metro rail corridors- Rasoolpura, Begumpet, Khairatabad, Ameerpet, St. Ann’s School (Secunderabad) and Dilsukhnagar.
Many tenders will be invited to remove foot over bridges. The majority of foot over bridges were constructed under the Fund Your City scheme. The structures were developed under Build, Own and Transfer (BOT) mode of the scheme.
The private agencies are suppose to bid for a time period till they would own them. After this, the ownership will be transferred to the civic body.
Around 10 foot over bridges including the structures on Necklace Road, Mehdipatnam, Shaikpet and near L.V. Prasad Eye Institute were also constructed in the same time period.
The foot over bridge at Mehdipatnam was removed a to construct PVNR Expressway which was constructed by a Mumbai based firm. It was found that the firm did not bothered to shifting the structure to another area.
Thus, the remaining foot over bridges became functional. In next phase, the foot over bridges at Jubilee Hills, Masab Tank and Malaysian Township were made a part of the adopted revenue model.
The revenue model did not show much results as compared to the plans to construct 70 odd foot over bridges.
Understanding the needs of foot over bridges on various roads, many agencies demanded Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation to shift the FoBs to other areas which are being removed. In this regard, many senior Municipal officials are also waiting for alternate sites to be provided by traffic and transportation department.
