GL Raheja Group Patriarch Gopal Raheja Passes Away

On Tuesday, Gopal Raheja of GL Raheja Group died, who was among the first professional property developers in the country, patriarch of the 11,000-crore.The actual reason for his death is not known though he was 80 and was ailing for some time now.

An active real estate developer since the 1960s, Gopal Raheja was mainly famous for his residential developments across central Mumbai’s Worli and the city’s periphery of Bandra, Khar, Santacruz and Juhu.

The GL Raheja real-estate organisation was estabilished more than five decades back. In Mumbai, now they are the largest private owners of land and have captured properties in other parts of the country through numerous subsidiaries.

Maharashtra Chamber of Housing Industry (MCHI) was founded by Gopal Raheja and he headed the industry body as its president in the initial years.

Lakshmandas, Gopal Raheja’s father was also a property developer and he inaugurated the K Raheja Group in the 1950s.Later the companies were split among Lachmandas Raheja’s sons, together with Gopal Raheja’s K Raheja Constructions, Chandru Raheja’s K Raheja Corp and Suresh Raheja’s K Raheja Universal.

Behind the group’s various successful retail and hospitality ventures across major cities of India, Gopal Raheja was the person.In 2008 he received the lifetime achievement award by MCHI.Many Mumbai-based developers appreciated  his deep understanding of the sector and leadership qualities.

Raheja was a civil engineer by qualification and he was also the main initiator members of the Practicing Engineers Architects and Town Planners Association of India (PEATA).

He accused his son Sandeep Raheja, of trying to usurp his entire business of 25 companies due to which he was also in news. In late 2012, he filed a petition against his son in the Bombay High Court and later Raheja senior had articulated his readiness to consider an out-of court settlement in this matter. Though the case is still in the court and the next hearing is scheduled in April.
