GMR proposes to develop massive green-field port at Kakinada
The Bangalore-based bigwig infrastructure firm GMR Group has completed initial studies in connection with its proposal to set up a massive green-field port at Kakinada, at an expected investment of approximately Rs 2,500 crore.
The proposed green-field port will be set up by GMR in the backyard of Kakinada Special Economic Zone (KSEZ) on Andhra seacoast. For the port, GMR has proposed to develop a 2,100-acre out of the 10,500 acres available with KSEZ.
The development of the huge green-field port will mark GMR’s foray into the seaports business. The firm has already earned repute for building modern airports in India and abroad.
According to unidentified sources familiar with the project, the proposed green-field port to be set up by GMR will – upon completion – become the most modern cargo hub on India’s eastern coast; especially since the location identified for the port comes with a 7-km long coast line.
With GMR having completed initial studies on setting up the massive port at Kakinada, a GMR official has revealed on the condition of anonymity that the company expects to go for public hearing on port project “in the next 4-6 months.”
The official also added: “The company is looking at building the port project in three years time after the public hearing is over.”
