After the proposed IT Corridor plan at Dona Paola failed, the state government has begun to identify land to set up India’s most prestigious educational institutes in Goa.

Mamata Banerjee, the C.M of West Bengal had announced about the construction of an AIIMS campus in West Bengal in the beginning of the week. On the same lines, Chief minister of Goa Manohar Parrikar on Wednesday stated that the Union government has asked the state to send a proposal within 30 days to set up the All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS) in the state.

Parrikar’s government is extremely interested to set up AIIMS, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) and Indian Institute of Management (IIM) in the state. The government is busy identifying land for these prestigious institutes and the Union Territory which was known only for tourism now will be known as a respectable business, technology and medical tourism destination too.

Parrikar mentioned that there are large tracts of non-productive government land available which could be used to make Goa an educational hub in the next 5 years. Parrikar said that as per his estimate each institute would require around 100 acres of land. Union human resources development (HRD) minister Smriti Irani will be visiting Goa in the next 2 days to monitor the progress in this case.

The good news is that the land acquisition for the National Institute of Technology at Cuncolim is almost done and the government is ready to lay a foundation stone for the NIT on Gandhi Jayanti, October 2.
