Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has received good response for the regularisation of water connections from residents after implementing a water amnesty scheme ‘Abhay Yojana’ to gain water tax dues from the citizens.
The amnesty scheme will be implemented till November 30. Around 1,700 citizens have applied for installation of new water meters under Abhay Yojana, Prakash Kadam, additional municipal commissioner said. Around 1,500 citizens have applied for rectifying their water bills as they consider the bills huge, he added. PCMC has initiated public awareness drives about the scheme by different medias.
Residents whose water meters are not working or who have not set up water meters after having authorised water connection, they have to install new water meters otherwise their connection will be disconnected as per the amnesty scheme. The civic body will take strict action against the residents who are planning to take unauthorised water connections.
A private firm has been appointed by PCMC on contract basis to take water meter readings and distribute bills in the city. The new water bill will have the photographs of the water meters along with readings and the organisation has started the work. As of now, they have collected 17,500 water connections with photographs.
The total water tax due is around Rs 58 crore and the civic water supply department expects to collect Rs 21 crore through this scheme. There are a total of 1.04 lakh authorised water connections fitted with water meters in the city, a civic official said.
