Government to Float Tenders for First Phase of Smart Cities

The government has planned to float tenders for the development of the first phase of its smart cities. The places identified for the project is Dholera in Gujarat and Shendra-Bidkin in Maharashtra

As per reports by a senior government official, the two proposed cities for development of the Smart City project as planned by the government will have its tenders floated in the near future. The Centre, presently headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi had announced his plans of creating an industrial agglomeration along the five proposed industrial corridors which will include places like:

Proposed plans:

  • The industrial agglomeration of these 5 corridors mentioned aims at giving a boost the manufacturing sector and also cater to the worker demands so that they are provided with better living standards. These were reported by the additional secretary of department of industrial policy and promotion (DIPP) Shatrughna Singh on the sidelines of the FICCI event.
  • He also states that the DMIC has will be choosing around 22 more cities which will be developed into smart cities, 7 of which will be taken up on Phase one.
  • The master plan of the two cities announced, Dholera and Shendra-Bidkin have already been chalked out in this fiscal year for which tenders will be afloat.
  • A National Industrial Corridor Authority will also be created, known as the NICA which will be covering all the corridors mentioned other than the DMIC that is aimed at channelizing institutional funding for the upcoming smart cities.

 

Official reports state that the DMIC has reached its advanced stages of planning which will lead the remaining corridors to be taken into purview by the authority. The NICA too will be formed within this fiscal year itself.

 

Infrastructural setups: Shatrughna Singh is also reported to have stated that Special purpose vehicles (SPVs) will be set up by the authorities which will help in undertaking infrastructure development within the cities.

For development of transport infrastructure that is needed to connect the cities to its outskirts, development responsibilities will be taken up by the Central and State Governments, leaving SPVs for city based developments only.
