Govt eyes surplus private land for plan rollout
The government in Kerala may acquire excess land in the possession of citizens for implementing its zero-landless project in the state, chief minister Oommen Chandy hinted on Sunday.
The chief minister said the government has sufficient revenue land in Kannur and Kasaragod districts of the state. “This is not the case in other districts. Authorities there will have to identify suitable land, and those who have surplus land will have to do some sacrifice,” Chandy said while inaugurating the newly formed Iritty taluk.
The chief minister also said that the state-government appointed committee’s report had been forwarded to the Centre. “Moreover, a memorandum issued by the ministry of environment and forests on December 20 has said that a final decision on the Kasturirangan report would be taken only after consultation with the states,” Chandy said.
He also said that those in Kannur who had not applied for land in Kannur under the zero-landless project could apply till February 28. The government has been considering a proposal to form Payyannur taluk. “The demand for Payyannur taluk is justified. A decision on this got delayed due to some technical issues,” he said.
Revenue minister Adoor Prakash, who presided over the function, said that Kerala would become a zero-landless state by next year. The function was also attended by the Finance minister K M Mani, rural development minister K C Joseph, K Sudhakaran, MP, MLAs Sunny Joseph, C Krishnan, A P Abdullakkutty and district collector M G Rajamanickam.
