Construction workMumbai: In order to control unauthorised constructions in the state, following the appalling building collapse in Mumbra, Thane, the state government has planned to appoint special officers at the municipal corporations.

The Minister for State for Housing, Sachin Ahir, stated that the government has decided that an officer will be appointed for each ward who will be responsible to check irregularities in construction activities in that particular ward. He said that several measures have been taken to maintain transparency in the proposed system.

Seventy-four persons, including 18 children, were killed in Thane district, when an unauthorised under-construction building at Shil-Phata collapsed on April 4. It was coming up on a forest land. Many political leaders blamed and criticised Thane Municipal Corporation and the state government for not being alert in regulating illegal buildings in Mumbai and other cities of the state.

Few days ago, while addressing a gathering at property expo, the housing minister had said that the government was planning to modify development control regulation 33(5) which would help create more affordable housing in the state. The proposed amendment proposes that, in place of additional floor space index (FSI), the redevelopment projects of Maharashtra Housing Area Development Authority (MHADA) will take extra flats from developers.

Ahir said that, in this regard, a notification will shortly be issued during the current Assembly session. It is estimated that the amended rule can generate 20,000 additional low-cost housing units.
