Gram Sabhas to help identify people to be listed under BPL
Coming to the help of those not included in the BPL list, Union minister of state for rural development, panchayats raj, drinking water and sanitation Upendra Kushwaha on Thursday announced here that the Centre will now empower the Gram Sabhas to identify those in need of Indira Awas Yojana (IAY) units and give them benefit of the centrally-sponsored scheme.
Kushwaha, addressing a presser here, said there were anomalies in the list of BPL people in Bihar, with a large number of poor families excluded while several well-to-do families were enlisted in it. He held the state government responsible for it.
Considering that the grant sanctioned for an IAY unit was not sufficient to build house, he said the beneficiaries of the scheme living in general areas will receive Rs 85,000 in place of Rs 70,000 now, while those living in difficult areas, including hilly and Maoist-infested ones, will receive Rs 1 lakh now.
The Gram Sabhas will help in identifying the people who are need to be mentioned in the BPL list. Only after this these people will be eligible for the privileges.
