Gujarat PCB issues show cause notice
Gujarat Pollution Control Board (GPCB) has issued a show cause notice to Vapi Waste and Effluent Management Co. Pvt. Ltd (VWEMCL) for neglecting the precautionary steps mandatory ahead of the monsoon at the common solid waste management site.
Industrial sludge had spread into the fields and orchards near Vapi after a protection wall of the common hazardous water disposal site broke. GPCB has instructed VWEMCL management to stop the operation of the common effluent treatment plant until a new dumping facility is found.
VWEMCL has been managing the facility since 2000 whose capacity had overshot in the past few months. The officials said that the industries were continuing to dump the solid waste in the facility despite instructions not to do so.
Reportedly, nearly 25,000 tonnes of sludge had spilled out from the site.
