Gurgaon: Homebuyers “volunteer” to work at delay-hit residential project site

Over this past weekend, buyers in a number of housing condominiums in Gurgaon and Noida were up in protest against delayed projects. One of the most noteworthy demonstrations was carried out by nearly 50 home buyers who protested at Unitech Residencies in Sector 33, Gurgaon.

The demonstration by these homebuyers marked a unique protest over delayed completion of the project, and the resultant delay in handing over the flats. The protesting home buyers “volunteered” to work at the project site during weekends, so as to ensure that the flats are delivered to them as early as possible.

About the delayed delivery of the more than 1,300 of the June 2009-launched Unitech Residencies project, Vikram Bishnoi – president of Residencies Apartments’ Buyers Association (RABA) – said that an amount of approximately Rs 50 lakh has been paid by each of the homebuyers, who are still awaiting the possession of their flats.

The affected homebuyers claim that Unitech had promised to hand over completed flats to them by December 2011. However, the developer has been asserting that the delay in the completion of the project has been caused by shortage of labour.

With the homebuyers having volunteered to work at the site, RABA secretary Anoop Rana said: “Most of the buyers work with leading MNCs, banks, financial institutions, IT and automobile firms. Yet, they have come together to work as manual labour so that they can move into their dream homes fast.”
