High Court directs to dump dry, wet waste separately
Bangalore- A new temporary landfill for dumping wet waste has been identified and approved by the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB).
Being located in Chikkanagamangala village of Sarjapura hobli in the outskirts of Bangalore, the new landfill covers an area of around 94 acres, which will be the destination to dump 2,500-3,000 tonnes of wet waste generated in the city per day.
The Karnataka High Court directed the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) to transport the wet and dry waste separately to different landfills instead of dumping them together. Dry waste will be transported to the Mandur landfill while wet waste to Survey No.31 of Chikkanagamangala village. This order was followed by the suggestion of Environment Impact Assessment Authority’s counsel Ravindra G. Kolle.
For the first time ever, dry and the wet waste will be dumped separately, though both the landfills are a temporary measure, as the BBMP is planning to establish sufficient number of waste processing units across the city.
The HC has set a four-months deadline to BBMP to set up three segregation and wet waste processing units in each ward.
