High-rise complex likely to come up to replace Kamla market
Kamala Market in Delhi may soon give way to a high-rise commercial complex. The North Delhi Municipal Corporation has plans to replace the 60 year old market, named after the wife of first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. NDMC Standing Committee Chairman Mohan Bhardwaj informs that by replacing market like Kamla nagar with modern commercial complexes, the space can be efficiently utilized. The move could also increase revenues, he added.
The shopkeepers are dismayed due to this development. The shopkeepers believe that restoring the market would be a good idea, instead of just building a new complex. NDMC points out that some of the parts could be preserved like the clock-tower. The market was inaugurated by the first president Rajendra Prasad. The clock tower, located next to the New Delhi railway station, is part of the city’s immediate post-colonial heritage.
Located in central Delhi’s Karol Bagh, Ghaffar Market, may also make way for a high-rise complex.
