In a Thursday announcement, well-known international hotel chain Kempinski said that it has plans underway to develop three new properties in India.

Sharing details about its plans for three new hotels in India, Kempinski Hotel’s Chief Operating Officer Duncan O’Rourke told Business Line that potential properties in Mumbai, Kolkata, and Kerala are being considered by the hotel chain for the new projects.

O’Rourke also said that, in Kerala, Kempinski intends having a resort in either Kovalam or the backwaters. He also added alongside that the hotel chain is currently “in talks” about a prospective resort at the mentioned Kerala locations.

The Kempinski group – which currently has more than 70 hotels in operation and plans to open 112 hotels by 2017 – has only one hotel in India, as of now. The hotel is the Kempinski Ambience Hotel Delhi, which is a 480-room property located in New Delhi.

Highlighting the increasing significance of the Indian market for international hotel chains in the years to come, O’Rourke said that Kempinski Hotels is planning an expansion in the country because the group believes that India’s fundamentals offer “strong growth opportunity.”

O’Rourke said: “India, historically, has not had an influx of high-end international chains but they are starting to come. India is an extremely important market, it is a tremendous growing economy.”
