Housing for all by 2022- The dream takes shape in a conclave convened by NAREDCO
In New Delhi the Narendra Modi government, chief ministers, top realty honchos, urban planners, private equity firms, bureaucrats and bankers are meeting for a 2 day conclave. They want to come up with a solution to the most annoying of all problems- finding a decent home for all the Indian citizens. This has been a part of Modi’s election manifesto and this task is so herculean that is easier said than done.
This conclave is named as “Housing for All by 2022”, and will be held between September 12 and13. It will be convened by the National Real Estate Development Council (NAREDCO) and will focus on a comprehensive roadmap to give a boost to the ailing housing sector.
And the Modi government time bound approach will be adopted here too and it will try to meet the deadline to ensure a decent home for all the Indians. NAREDCO is an autonomous self-regulatory body which was set up in 1998 under the protective shield of the ministry of housing and urban poverty alleviation.
Now we need to wait and watch and see if NAREDCO succeeds in its noble and daunting, mission of providing a shelter to all the Indians by India’s 75th Independence Day. For the 12th Five Year Plan (2012–2017), the ministry of housing and urban poverty alleviation ministry (HUPA) has come up with a data which is heart breaking. At present in the urban centres there is an estimated shortage of close to 18.78 million homes. This includes households that exist in unsafe dwellings or inhabitable environments.
