Housing Ministry to support affordable, sustainable and scalable green buildings
The Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation plans to map the needs and requirements for affordable housing. They plan to work closely with all the stakeholders in promoting Green Affordable Housing. They also plan to work with the State Governments closely so that the project can be executed with efficiency.
The ministry has proposed to make affordable housing an integral part of smart cities.The government is looking at creating an inclusive environment as the affordable housing is meant for the urban poor. At present they live in inhabitable conditions in slums which lack all the basic amenities like potable drinking water and sanitation.
Anita Agnihotri the Secretary of Housing Ministry stated that with increased urbanisation, there is a growing need to develop and promote housing structures. She was speaking at the CII-IGBC (Confederation of Indian Industry- Indian Green Building Council) Green Building Congress 2014 in Hyderabad. She emphasised on the need of not only having affordable structures, but these structures should also be sustainable and scalable.
She said the housing sector has a multiplier effect in terms of providing employment and security. She fees that to make this happen, it is imperative to work closely with all the stakeholders. She made it very clear that the Ministry would be pleased to work with IGBC and other stakeholders and extend support to them in every way.
Prem C Jain the Chairman of IGBC stated that India is the second country in the world with the largest green building footprint. India has over 2.2 billion square feet of green building space.
