The orders are given by an Inter-Ministerial Group (IMG) which analyzed the mega projects in the steel sector with an objective to fast-tracking them. Center has asked  major steel PSUs to established stockyards in rural areas to encourage per capital steel consumption.

IMG says that the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant’s (VSP) Hyderabad stockyard is established at Patancheru and is connected by single lane road from National Highway which needs to be enlarged to double lane road.

RNIL is working to complete its expansion and modernization project to uplift the capacity from 3 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) to 7.3 MTPA.

The government has asked the main steel companies like SAIL and RINL to established and improve stockyards in rural areas so that consumers save on time and cost of transportation.

Mr. Beni Prasad Verma, Steel minister, says that the leading steel developers like SAIL and RINL have been asked to develop stockyards in rural areas for offering products required in the development. This will minimize time and price of transportation for consumers and increase per man consumption.

The steel consumption in India is nearly 60 kg per capita against the global average of 210 kg per capita. In China, the steel consumption is 460 kg. A Parliamentary panel on Steel and Coal expressed unsatisfaction over the low steel consumption. RNIL has a dream program to increase the capacity of steel plant to 20 MPTA.
