Inadequate proper roads problems might end
It has been a mixed bag so far for the highways sector under the new government. And it has also taken some initiatives in order to ease the process to award projects and push through held-up works, but a key demand on the wish list of the road transport ministry and National Highways Authority of India to quicken project approvals hasn’t been taken up.
The sector is a key for overall economic growth as experts say inadequate roads and other infrastructure shave as much as two percentage points off India’s gross domestic product. Lack of funds and over-regulation has made the sector gasping for air, and it has been expecting quick remedial measures from the Narendra Modi government.
The road transport ministry under Nitin Gadkari and the highways development agency had sought powers to decide on the mode to be chosen to carry out road projects. They argue that this would make the process quicker and also that they are competent enough to decide on the model best suited for a project by taking various factors into account, including market conditions.
