India, Myanmar to resume talks about proposed bus service between the two countries
In a move which will help revive a long-standing road project that will help strengthen the ties between India and Myanmar, the intention to resume talks on the proposal to commence a bus service between the two countries have recently been signalled by Myanmar.
It has been revealed by a Ministry of Roads official – on the condition of anonymity – that, to begin the process of finalizing the agreement for the proposed bus service between India and Myanmar, a delegation from India is scheduled to meet with the officials from the government of Myanmar.
The Indian delegation which will hold a meeting with the Myanmar officials will include officials from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, as well as officials from the Ministry of External Affairs. The delegation will reach Myanmar for the meeting on June13.
Since there currently is no connectivity via road between India and Myanmar, the proposed bus service will connect Imphal and Mandalay.
Terming the proposed bus service between India and Myanmar as a “game-changer,” the Ministry of Roads official said that the bus service will be “a precursor for starting commercial activities” between the countries, as well as “an enabler for signing Asean-India trade agreement.”
The official also said: “We had sent our memorandum of understanding (MoU) and protocol for a passenger bus service for people-to-people contact a year back. The proposal went on the back burner. The resuming of talks is a welcome sign.”
