India ranked third in the USGBC Report- Green building Initiatives get a boost
India was ranked third among a list of the top 10 countries in the world by the US Green Building Council (USGBC) outside the US. Canada and China occupy the top two slots in the report. It is believed that the “green” initiatives of building construction industry are largely weighed by USGBC and India has been doing well in that space. The report talks largely about the ‘’green’’ movement that is transforming the building construction industry, and is encouraging it to take measures to build healthy, environment friendly, high-performing structures that benefit the planet and its people.
It is a great news for all the residents in India that ‘’The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design’’ (LEED) certification, an internationally recognised standard for measuring a building’s carbon footprint, is now adopted by many residential real estate developers in India. By definition, a green building uses less water, optimises on energy efficiency, uses solar and wind energy for its various needs (water heating, cooking, running the pumps and generators etc.), conserves natural resources, generates less waste and provides healthier spaces for its occupants, in comparison to a conventional building.
Rick Fedrizzi, the president, CEO and founding chair of USGBC stated that the world wide climate change and global warming is due to the interference with nature by mankind and measures need to be taken for environment friendly housing.
