Indian cities fare poorly in the worldwide city rating parameters- Janagraha Report
A Bangalore -based non -profit organisation, Janaagraha Centre for Citizenship and Democracy survey has published the ratings of the Indian cities. If we have to compare the Indian cities with globally bench marked London and New York, then the ratings are not very impressive. The Indian cities score a not-too-impressive 2.5 – 4.0 rating on a scale of ten. London scores 9.6 and New York 9.3.
In India, Kolkata tops at 4.0 points, followed closely by Thiruvananthpuram while fancied Chandigarh scores the lowest overall at 2.5. Now these ratings might baffle a common citizen, the agency ratings for urban India usually focus on provision of civic amenities and technologically driven urban amenities. Very rarely the urban Indian cities are benchmarked on parameters like citizen participation, public services, powers of municipal corporations, transparency in governance and urban planning. However this report prepared by Janagraha has taken these parameters into consideration.
This week its second edition of the Annual Survey of India’s City-Systems (ASICS) was released. It covers 21 cities across 18 states and using these yardsticks for rating the cities.
Kolkata scored the highest at 4.0 because of its sound electoral process, a robust state election commission and witnesses high voter turnouts during the elections most of the times.
Says Ramesh Ramanathan, co-founder Janaagraha mentioned that over the years urban residents have become immune to living with overflowing garbage in their backyards, arduous commutes to their workplaces, shabby housing and minimal social or cultural outlets. Though this report, he wants to bring about a positive change in the nation.
