India’s water reservoirs at 19% of capacity

No Comments Sub Category:Awareness,Cities,Civic Issues,Community,Health,Municipality Posted On: Jul 30, 2012
A government data shows that water levels in India’s main reservoirs have gone down to 19 percentage points which is less than percentage from previous year. It was at 24% last year.
The latest level has improved only five percentage points, reflecting the poor monsoon this year. Recently, the government showed its concern over the issue declaring the possibility of drought this year.
The government will be having a meeting next week to discuss the lack of rains, defining output for the major consumer and producer of food crops.
Generally reservoirs are used if monsoon rain is not enough for planting paddy crops, but primarily they are important for hydro-power. They also provide water later in the year to irrigate winter crops such as wheat and rapeseed.
